The Profit Magic of Stock Transaction Timing

Posted by Tauke Saham

Book Description

Can a $10,000 investment yield $1,000,000 in a year? In five years? If so, what is the risk involved?

These are the kinds of questions to which this work is addressed. Such fantastic results are possible in the stock market. Individual issues fluctuate widely enough and often enough to permit this and more. Techniques are presented here that put an average yield on invested capital of 10% per month, well within the realm of possibility. Compounding profits at this rate, such a yield can return $1,000,000 on a $10,000 investment within 50 months.

An actual trading experiment will be described using these principles which produced an 8.9% yield per transaction--every 9.7 days. Such a yield, if continued, compounds $10,000 to $1,000,000 in 15 months. If such results can be attained in the market -- why isn't everyone doing it?

The answer is complex, but the elements are simple: effort, knowledge and psychological barriers. Any goal this worthwhile requires time and effort. Most investors, amateur and professional do not have the kind of analytical background needed to shear through rumor, opinion, and adage to get at the basis of why stock prices change. And finally, even with knowledge in hand, many investors lack training in the emotion-logic balance required for success.

Nevertheless, all of these obstacles can be overcome. It is the purpose of this book to provide you with the essentials. The results are yours if you care to apply yourself with sufficient intensity. Investment operations will be presented here in a deliberately unorthodox manner. We will turn our backs firmly on all cliches, adages, and market lore that will not withstand critical scrutiny. Where necessary, we will not hesitate to form new ones that do fit the facts.

You will find here that the big money in investing stems from the principle of "profit compounding:---of short-term trades. It is further shown that this potential cannot be exploited in an optimum manner without a large improvement in transaction-timing capability that cannot be achieved using tradional investment methods.

You will be exposed to: a concept of profit maximization; a model of stock price motion with prediction implications; an explanation of why chart patterns form---and how to use this knowledge to your profit; step-by-step methods for using the price-motion model to generate definite "wait," "buy," "hold," "sell," "sell short," "cover short," and "protect profit" signals; an explanation of why moving averages work and how to design your own for use in transaction timing; a complete trading method: how to select issues, how to analyze them for action signals, and how to improve your chances of turning and keeping a profit; the extent to which you should be concerned by chance factors, whether or not you should sell in case of war or financial crisis; the reasons why psychological considerations can affect your profits and what you can do about it; an introduction to numerical analysis and spectral analysis, upon which the results on the book are based.

The problems of trading techniques and methods are dealt with directly. Enough methods and references are included to permit further research if desired.

The Compleat Day Trader II

Posted by Tauke Saham

The Compleat Day Trader II builds on the ideas presented in Bernstein's first day-trading book, The Compleat Day Trader. This time around, Bernstein focuses on more advanced trading systems and places particular emphasis on the importance of self-discipline in day trading, and he zeros in on the best futures markets to trade, including the S&P 500, Treasury bonds, and European currencies. He peppers the book with cautions about the difficulties of day trading, saying, for example:

The bad news is that it's getting harder and harder to win as the markets become more competitive and as insiders grab onto opportunities before the general public has had a chance to do so. Fortunately, the basic rules of profitable futures trading still apply. Therefore, if you follow the rules, you will improve your odds of success, even though they may be less than they would have been 15 years ago.

The lure of making a living--if not a fortune--on the daily ups and downs of the stock and commodity markets has drawn thousands into this high-stakes game. Just how many profitable day traders there are is impossible to gauge, but judging from message boards and articles in the financial press, it's a safe bet that lots of people lose lots of money. Reading both The Compleat Day Trader and The Compleat Day Trader II should you bring you to the conclusion that while profitable day trading is possible, it requires more than just a passing interest. Proceed with caution.

Toby Crabel has written a great book. The patterns he discusses are great for swing trading and day trading. You will learn about narrow range days, inside days, bull hooks, bear hooks and so on. These patterns can easily be translated into most commercial trading software. This is one of the few books I like. Even if you decide not to trade these patterns they can still be helpful in predicting market behavior. Please do not think that Mr.Crabel discusses double tops and double bottoms, head and shoulders and all that other garbage. However, you will find very unique ideas that you probably never considered. I find it very interesting that the least reviewed trading books on this website are often the best ones.

The New Science of Technical Analysis

Posted by Tauke Saham

"Good book if you have mastered the basics, if not then good luck my friend cause there is no methods that can really stand alone in this book. But this book will really help you if you have a good method but just want to improve it." - TS

Book Description

DeMark has been a most-valued advisor to such financial barons as Leon Cooperman and Laurence Tisch. He and his models have shaped the investment strategies at some of the largest and most successful trading operations in the world, including Tudor Group, Odyssey Partners, and Warburg, Pincus. His word is gold among decision-makers at such investment giants as Goldman Sachs, Citibank, Discount Corp., and Criterion Fund. Now, at last, Thomas DeMark has decided to go public and share with traders and investors everywhere the proven forecasting techniques that have made him one of the most potent behind-the-scenes forces in the world.

In this, his long-awaited first book, technical analysis guru Thomas R. DeMark describes the sophisticated market timing models, which he developed over the course of nearly a quarter century, devoted to the study of market trends and forecasting techniques. Rigorously scientific, rather than 'artistic' or intuitive, the empirically based approach used by DeMark eliminates reliance on gut-feelings and guesswork and serves as the rational foundation for dynamic systems that mechanically generate buy and sell signals. Proven to work with every type of market and all forms of data, these systems, along with a number of new and highly effective indicators which he introduces for the first time in this book, will dramatically improve your trading capability and versatility.

The New Science of Technical Analysis is sure to be ranked among the rare handful of books that irrevocably transform the way business is done around the world.

Jeff Cooper: 5-day Momentum Method

Posted by Tauke Saham

This method, which is called 5 Day Momentum Method, specifically identifies short-term pullbacks in strongly trending stocks and pinpoints where and when to enter to participate when the trend resumes.

THIS METHOD IS NOT THE HOLY GRAIL! It is, though, a very correct way to trade and it has proven itself over the years. More importantly, it applies to downtrending stocks as well as uptrending stocks which will allow you to profit no matter what type of market we are in.

Freakonomics

Posted by Tauke Saham

Book Summary:

Economics is not widely considered to be one of the sexier sciences. The annual Nobel Prize winner in that field never receives as much publicity as his or her compatriots in peace, literature, or physics. But if such slights are based on the notion that economics is dull, or that economists are concerned only with finance itself, Steven D. Levitt will change some minds.

In Freakonomics (written with Stephen J. Dubner), Levitt argues that many apparent mysteries of everyday life don't need to be so mysterious: they could be illuminated and made even more fascinating by asking the right questions and drawing connections. For example, Levitt traces the drop in violent crime rates to a drop in violent criminals and, digging further, to the Roe v. Wade decision that preempted the existence of some people who would be born to poverty and hardship.

Elsewhere, by analyzing data gathered from inner-city Chicago drug-dealing gangs, Levitt outlines a corporate structure much like McDonald's, where the top bosses make great money while scores of underlings make something below minimum wage.

And in a section that may alarm or relieve worried parents, Levitt argues that parenting methods don't really matter much and that a backyard swimming pool is much more dangerous than a gun. These enlightening chapters are separated by effusive passages from Dubner's 2003 profile of Levitt in The New York Times Magazine, which led to the book being written. In a book filled with bold logic, such back-patting veers Freakonomics, however briefly, away from what Levitt actually has to say. Although maybe there's a good economic reason for that too, and we're just not getting it yet.
